We see ourselves as inclusive of the broader dental community. Many of our patients are referred by their dentist for all or part of their implant treatment. We actively encourage the involvement of patients' dentists in their management. Some patients' dentists do not provide dental implant work and so for those patients the full range of services can be provided including follow-up and maintenance of dental implants. We do however restrict ourselves to dental implant treatment and so we do not do general dentistry. On completion of their dental implant care the patient will return to their own dentist for continuing dental care. Many of our patients, without their own dentist, have full dentures and so they can also be comprehensively provided for.
For patients without an implant dentist, the core clinician of the group is Dr Andrew Newsom, he has training and experience in the placement and restoration of dental implants. He is usually the first port of call for new patients to the Dental Implant Centre and takes the overall responsibility for the long-term treatment plan. Part of the team involves specialist oral surgeons who usually place the implants.
Tauranga OMS (Tauranga Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) has an association with the Dental Implant Centre to provide the surgical care for the team. For patients with a dentist who provides implant dentistry, they are often referred directly to one of the surgeons of Tauranga OMS.
